More than dams

Ask most Brazos River Authority employees what they do for a living and be prepared for a long answer.

It’s not because the answer is difficult per say. It’s more due to the excitement surrounding the profession that so many BRA employees have made their careers. That passion and expertise are part of what makes the BRA what it is today.

But our employees also know that it’s hard to be passionate about something you don’t understand. Most people turn on the faucet, and water comes out. Stepping in the shower, you might sing your heart out, but probably don’t spend much time thinking about how that water got there.

So, we’ve created this video in hopes of better explaining why we do, what we do.

“Very few Texans understand the benefits provided by River Authorities,” said BRA General Manager/CEO David Collinsworth. “We have so many complex issues that our experts manage on a daily basis; issues that could impact water supply.”

Believe it or not, social media has helped. The BRA aims to provide educational material in interesting ways on Facebook, Twitter, Instagram and through its quarterly newsletter. A video project was a natural progression, Collinsworth said.

“We hope to continue to provide folks a better understanding of what we do and why we do it,” Collinsworth said. “Better informed stakeholders will promote better communications, improved water supply and a safer Texas.”

The BRA hired Washington D.C.-based Flying Colors Broadcasts to produce the video. The company visited each of the BRA-owned and operated reservoirs capturing awe-inspiring footage of Possum Kingdom Lake’s Morris Sheppard Dam, Lake Limestone’s Sterling C. Robertson Dam, and Lake Granbury’s DeCordova Bend Dam. Members of the BRA management team as well as reservoir managers were interviewed at each location sharing thoughts and insights into operations.

When you’re done, check out our video highlighting how each gate operates at our dams here. And then watch this one which answers a frequently asked question: Why are the lake levels fluctuating?
