The Watershed
The Bosque River Watershed has a drainage area of more than 1600 square miles, extending northwest from the City of Waco in McLennan County to parts of Bosque, Coryell, Hamilton, and Erath Counties. Major stream segments in the watershed include the North Bosque, Middle Bosque, Hog Creek, and South Bosque. At the confluence of the major tributaries, the streams are impounded to form Lake Waco, which provides drinking water for over 200,000 residents in and around the city.
The North Bosque River is the longest branch within the watershed. The North Bosque basin encompasses all or part of the communities of Stephenville, Hico, Iredell, Meridian, Clifton, and Valley Mills. The North Bosque Watershed drains nearly 75 percent of the total land area of the entire Bosque Watershed. However, in a recent report published by the Texas Institute for Applied Environmental Research (TIAER) and supported by a review of United States Geological Survey (USGS) stream gage data, its relative contribution of water to Lake Waco when compared to the other tributaries can vary from 29 percent to 81 percent. The North Bosque River was included on the 1998 Texas Clean Water Act § 303(d)
list and judged to be impaired under water quality guidelines
for nutrients and aquatic plant growth.
