Protection Plan
As a part of its System Management and Drought Protection Plan, the Brazos
River Authority (Authority) filed an application for a water rights permit
with the Texas Commission on Environmental Quality (TCEQ). The proposed
permit will allow the appropriation of water system-wide within the Brazos
River Basin to meet customers’ future water needs more efficiently.
Proposed
Allens Creek Reservoir Project
The Authority is actively pursuing its own long-range water resource development plan. A key element in this plan is the proposed Allens Creek reservoir to be built in Austin County. The proposed reservoir, when completed, will supply an additional 92,000 acre-feet of water.
Proposed
Regional Water Planning
The Authority is actively involved in the Senate Bill 1 regional water planning process authorized by the Texas Legislature in 1997. Three regions are included in the Brazos River basin: Llano Estacado (the High Plains), Brazos G (37 counties in the middle of the basin) and Region H (which includes four lower-basin counties). The regional water plans will provide for the orderly development, management, and conservation of water resources, including drought preparation and response. The goal of the planning process is to assure that sufficient water will be available at a reasonable cost to ensure public health, safety, and welfare, to further economic development, and to protect agricultural and natural resources.
Brazos-Colorado Alliance
The Brazos River Authority and the Lower Colorado River Authority formed the Brazos-Colorado Alliance to cooperate in the conservation, planning and development of regional water resources. The Alliance can address immediate and long-term water and wastewater needs in areas of interest to both river authorities.
