The City of Sugar Land recently took a major step forward in municipal water conservation efforts in the Brazos River basin with completion of a reclaimed water treatment facility. Located at the city’s south wastewater treatment plant, which is operated by the Brazos River Authority, the new facility will allow for the use of treated effluent or reclaimed water for landscaping purposes.  

A partnership between the City of Sugar Land and the Fort Bend County Municipal Utility District (MUD) 128, the new facility receives water from the wastewater plant, treating it in the new facility to improve quality. The MUD plans to utilize up to two million gallons of treated wastewater to fill amenity lakes and for irrigation within the Riverstone development.

The increased use of reclaimed water is a strategy identified by the City of Sugar Land in their Water Master Plan and contributes to the goals established for the city to meet the groundwater reduction requirements of the Fort Bend Subsidence District.
