MAJOR RIVERS OFFERS EDUCATIONAL LOOK AT TEXAS WATER

MR-promo-cover

Elementary students can “saddle up” and gain a greater understanding about water in Texas with Major Rivers and his horse Aquifer through the Major Rivers educational program.

The curriculum  is designed to teach students about the state’s water resources, including how water is treated and delivered to homes, schools and businesses, the importance of caring for and protecting our water resources and how to wisely use water so it is available for the future.

The program is geared toward fourth or fifth grade science and social studies courses, and the topics also include some language arts and math, too.

The Brazos River Authority is a sponsor of the program, along with the Texas Water Development Board and other state river authorities. The BRA mails packages free of charge to schools within the Brazos basin since the early 1990s. Major Rivers was originally developed by the Lower Colorado River Authority in 1989 with input from educators and other state water organizations. The program has been revised and updated multiple times to meet state education standards.

Packets mailed to teachers free of charge include student workbooks, tests, home information guides and a DVD. Also included is a teacher’s guide with tips, suggestions and overhead transparencies.

Major Rivers offers a fun and informative way for children to learn about the importance of water. The program includes seven lessons and reviews, with workbook exercises.

The program was most recently updated in 2012, with plans for another update in 2017 to reflect the newest State Water Plan.

Elementary school teachers within the Brazos River basin may request a Major Rivers curriculum kit via email at information@brazos.org or by calling  Ace Fuller at 254-761-3115 .
